The police have arrested one man on a complaint by a tribal girl that he and two others gang-raped her onthe Kathing hillock at Heingang in Imphal West district on Wednesday afternoon.

The other two accused are still at large.

Talking to reporters at the Press club here on Friday evening, the girl said she and her boyfriend had met at the hillock and were talking when the “three local toughs” beat them up and raped her.

Moreover, they demanded Rs. 50,000, holding out a threat that they were members of a local club and that the duo’s “immoral activities” would be exposed. The boy and the girl were later released, after slashing the demand to Rs 10,000.

However, when villagers and the club took up her cause, the main accused, Abung Khuraijam (38), sought to wriggle out by offering to pay a fine of Rs. 50,000. But they handed him over to the police.

The girl said she and her boyfriend, both from Tamenglong district, were staying in their relatives’ houses at Heingang to pursue education in Imphal.
