Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad has arrested a top Naxalite leader who is also suspected to be active in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.

Surya Devra Prabhakar, a state committee member of the CPI (Maoist), was apprehended here last night. He is wanted in several cases of Naxal violence in the State, ATS officials said on Tuesday.

Police suspect Prabhakar, hailing from Warangal in Andhra Pradesh, might have been involved in Naxal activities in the southern state and also Gujarat.

Acting on a tip off, police laid a trap and nabbed Prabhakar, a member of the policy-making set up of the extremists in the state, from his house in Kanjur Marg area, ATS chief K P Raghuvanshi said.

During a search at this house where he was staying for over eight months, police recovered a computer, pen drive, mobile phone and Naxal literature, the officials said.

He was found in possession of election card and Central Railway travel pass bearing his photograph. Bharat Raman Gandhi was written in the name column of these cards, they said.

During preliminary probe, Prabhakar has admitted that he had been associated with People’s War Group since 1978 and CPI (Maoist) later, they said.
