Top Maoist leader surrenders in Odisha

Surrender of a female Maoist cadre Radha Madkami alias Soma Madkami, who had Rs. four lakh reward on her head, in Malkangiri district of Odisha coincided with start of martyrs’ week of naxalites on Thursday.

She surrendered before Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Mitrabhanu Mohapatra. According to police sources, Radha was part of Maoist organisation since past 14 years and at present she was an area committee member of Kalimela Dalam of outlawed CPI (Maoist). Over 50 cases related to violence in different parts of Odisha were pending against her. She was involved in the attack on R.Udayagiri police station in Gajapati, attack on NALCO mines at Damanjodi in Koraput district, landmine blast in MV-126 village in Malkangiri district etc. On July 21 five top naxalite with rewards on their heads, including a couple from Malkangiri district and two from adjoining Chhatisgarh had surrendered before police in the district.

Meanwhile, security was heightened in naxalite infested districts of south Odisha like Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal etc for martyrs’ week of ultras. Odisha State Road Transport Corporation for security reasons has decided to stop plying its buses in Maoist infested areas during the period till Aug 3. According to police sources, special check posts have been set up at various entry points to the naxal infested districts and combing operation has been intensified. In several remote areas posters and banners of Maoists calling youths to joint them were seen.
