The murder of a 47-year-old Tripura woman near the border with Bangladesh has sparked tension at Haripur in South District.
The blood-draped body of Malati Debnath was recovered on Monday evening in the Indian side but across barbed wire fencing. The Border Security Force is approaching Bangladesh to help in the investigation. “We believe Bangladeshi miscreants were responsible for the murder,” a police officer said on Tuesday.
Fencing along the eastern frontier has been constructed 150 yards away from zero line of the border to respect a bilateral agreement with Bangladesh.
Post-mortem confirms murderIt is said Malati and her husband Tapan Debnath used to collect firewood from across the fencing to earn a living. On Monday afternoon, she alone entered through a gate managed by the BSF but did not return. Later a few villagers saw her body, half covered with a sack, near the fencing gate. Post mortem confirmed that she was murdered with sharp and blunt weapons.
