Veteran BJP leader from West Bengal Tathagata Roy will be sworn in as the Governor of Tripura on Wednesday.
He was accorded a warm reception when he arrived here on Tuesday.
Officials said the swearing-in ceremony would take place at the Raj Bhavan at 3 p.m. High Court Chief Justice Deepak Kumar Gupta will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Roy, who will be the 16th Governor.
Opposition Congress had criticised the appointment of Tathagata Roy for his alleged communal rhetoric. Tripura’s ruling CPI(M) did not object to his appointment but the party clarified that it would not accept any breach of line by the new Governor. “We will take political recourse if the Governor does not function within his constitutional propriety,” party State secretary Bijan Dhar told newsmen.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar did not comment on the issue.
The Chief Minister, his ministerial colleagues and senior bureaucrats were present at the Raj Bhavan when Mr. Roy was accorded an official welcome.
Earlier, Padmanabha Balkrishna Acharya, the Nagaland Governor who had been discharging additional duty for Tripura, was given a farewell by the State government.
