Taj unaffected by quakes

April 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - Meerut:

All the monuments in Agra under archaeological survey of India including the Taj Mahal are safe and were not affected by the recent earthquakes.

According to the Superintending Archaeologist of Agra ASI Bhuvan Vikram no harm was done to the Taj Mahal by the tremors felt by north India on Saturday and Sunday.

Repeated tremors caused concern among the ASI officials who ran to the monuments immediately after the quakes and did a detailed physical inspection of all the monuments in the city.

“Taj Mahal is pretty much safe and remained largely unaffected by the earthquakes. And I can say the same thing about other archaeological monuments under the ASI Agra,” said Mr. Vikram.

“I am saying this after we did physical inspection of all the monuments including the vulnerable parts of the monuments immediately after the two earthquakes we felt on Saturday,” he added.

Repeated tremors rocked Agra and several other cities in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday and Sunday. At least 12 people were dead and several others injured in the State due to the tremors. In Agra several houses were damaged by the quake. A balcony of the Sarojini Naidu Medical College collapsed from the earthquake.
