The former Gujarat Chief Minister, Shankersinh Vaghela, was on Tuesday appointed leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Gujarat by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in New Delhi.

Mr. Vaghela, 72, succeeds Shaktisinh Gohil, who was the CLP leader in the last Assembly.

Earlier, the CLP met in Gandhinagar and passed a resolution authorising Ms. Gandhi to decide on the new leader. The meeting was held in the presence of the central party observers — Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Congress State in-charge Mohan Prakash.

Ms. Dikshit met all 59 MLAs separately and elicited their views, sources in the Congress said.
