Amid reports of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s elevation to the position of party president later this year, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Amarinder Singh said here on Friday that Sonia Gandhi should continue to lead the party as its president. He said Mr. Gandhi should assist her as its vice-president.
“I think she should continue to be president and he should be vice-president. Along the way, he will learn everything,” Capt. Singh, former Punjab Chief Minister, said. “The combination has worked very well for the party.”
He recently issued a statement in Chandigarh lauding Ms. Gandhi for leading the Congress agitation against the Land Bill brought by the Narendra Modi government and extending the party’s support to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after he was summoned by the court in the coal scam case. Elaborating on it on Friday, he said: “On both counts, she led from the front. Ms. Gandhi led the marches on the street. She is our leader, she did the right thing. We are all with her.”
“I have the utmost admiration for her. I have seen her as [Congress] president for 16 years. What is modern management? She gives you a task and you are expected to do it. If you do it, she backs you. If you don’t perform, you need to be sacked,” he said. “Ms. Gandhi makes up her mind and sticks to it.”
