The Gujarat government has reinstated suspended IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian, accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.
He and another accused, police inspector B.R. Chaubey, were granted bail by the Supreme Court in March after they spent seven years in jail.
While Mr. Pandian has been posted as a liaison officer of the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation in Mumbai, the State police have not yet taken a decision on Mr. Chaubey’s posting.
“At present, Mr. Pandian is not in judicial custody. However, the criminal case registered against him is pending before the appropriate court. The Gujarat government took cognisance of the fact that at present, Mr. Pandian is not under any custody and has been granted bail by the Supreme Court, subject to certain conditions,” the December 8 order says.
Mr. Pandian, a 1996-batch officer, was placed under suspension in 2007 following his arrest.
