Life was affected in Kashmir Valley after separatists called for a shutdown ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the State on Sunday.

Most shops, fuel stations and private businesses remained closed in the wake of the call issued by separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik. Besides Srinagar, south and north Kashmir also wore a deserted look.

Mr. Modi will arrive in Jammu's Udhampur around 3 p.m. and throw open the 9.28 km-long Chenani-Nashri tunnel on the highway. The tunnel, the country's longest, will reduce travel time from Srinagar to Jammu by two hours. Built at the cost of ₹3.720 crore, the tunnel will bypass 30 km of treacherous and landslide-prone areas.

Security has been tightened across the Valley and around the venue in Udhampur.

In the wake of a militant attack on the Jammu-Srinagar highway on Saturday, security has been further upgraded across the highway. Mobile patrols and camera-fitted vehicles are manning sensitive locations in Srinagar.
