The interrogation of Abdul Ahad Jan, who threw a shoe at Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the Independence Day function here, has been put on hold as he has been hospitalised for hypertension.
The 52-year-old suspended head constable was shifted to the Soura Medical Institute on Sunday evening after he complained of illness. Sources said Jan vomited blood.
On Monday morning, he was shifted to the Police Hospital as people started visiting him at the Soura institute. He was moved to yet another hospital for some tests. Even as he was being shifted, he shouted pro-freedom slogans, the sources said.
Jan has not named any political party or leader as having motivated him to throw the shoe at the Chief Minister. “He did not name anybody,” sources privy to preliminary questioning told The Hindu .
As for the claim, attributed to Jan on Sunday, that he had been approached by a political party leader, using whose entry pass he gained entry into the function venue, the sources said no pass was recovered from him. He had apparently managed to get access to the VIP pavilion using his own identity card.
Meanwhile, people thronged his house at Ajas in Bandipore district and expressed solidarity with his family. Witnesses said women showered flowers on Jan's wife, Begam Jan, while others beat drums outside the house.
On Sunday evening, 25 persons were injured, three of them critically, when the police opened fire in Bandipore. The people had gathered to “celebrate Jan's act.”
