PANAJI: Rajya Sabha MP from Goa Shantaram Naik on Friday replaced Luizinho Faleiro as the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president. Mr. Naik’s term in the Rajya Sabha expires later this month.

AICC General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi issued a statement about the change in leadership on Friday.

Mr. Faleiro, an MLA, was facing a rebellion from a section of MLAs who held him and former AICC General Secretary and in-charge of Goa desk, Digvijaya Singh, responsible for the party’s failure to form a government in the State in March.

The Congress had emerged as the single largest party in the Legislative Assembly election, with 17 MLAs in the 40-member House.
