A passenger train hangs from a bridge after it derailed at Basugaon in Chirang district of Assam on Saturday.

Four persons were injured when five coaches and the engine of the Alipurduar-Guwahati Sifung passenger train jumped the track in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Saturday.

The incident occurred on a bridge between Salakati and Basugaon stations at 5.15 a.m., spokesman for the North Eastern Frontier Railway, Pranav Jyoti Sharma, said here. The motorman and the assistant driver of the train are among the injured.

The derailment affected trains on the up line and some passenger trains were cancelled, the spokesman said.

The cancelled passenger trains are New Jalpaiguri- Dekargaon passenger, Fakiragram-Kamakhya passenger, New Jalpaiguri-New Coochbehar Special, Dhubri-Fakiragram passenger, Guwahati-Alipurduar junction Passenger, Kamakhya- Fakiragram passenger, Silghat-Dhubri Rajyarani Express, New Coochbehar-New Jalpaiguri special and Kamakhya-Alipurduar Intercity Express.

Sunday’s Fakiragram-Dhubri passenger, too, has been cancelled.
