December 04, 2010 02:17 am | Updated 02:17 am IST - Guwahati:

The Cachar Police have arrested seven college-going students in southern Assam's Silchar town on charges of gang-rape of a 35-year-old Mizo woman.

Deputy Commissioner H.K. Dev Mahanta told The Hindu that there were altogether 10 accused in the 17-20 age group.

While seven of them have been arrested, the police are searching for the other three, he said. The incident took place on Wednesday, Mr. Mahanta added.

'Ensure safety'

Meanwhile, the North East Students' Organisation (NESO), the umbrella outfit of student bodies in the north-east, has asked the Centre to ensure the safety of north-eastern girl students studying in Delhi and women professionals from the region working in the National Capital Region.

Protest day

The student body on Friday announced a series of agitations to protest the gang rape of a Mizo woman in Delhi.

It has decided to observe December 15 as a ‘protest day' in all the north-eastern States and submit memorandum to each State government urging them to pressure the Central government to ensure the safety of the region's students in Delhi.
