Security stepped up in U.P. ahead of Christmas

December 25, 2014 01:07 am | Updated 01:07 am IST - LUCKNOW:

Security personnel have been asked to maintain maximum vigil at churches and Christian institutions in Uttar Pradesh in view of Christmas on Thursday. Directives to this effect have been sent to the SSPs and District Magistrates by the Director General of Police, A.L. Banerjee and the Home Department.

These directives will come into effect from Christmas eve when devotees attend late night service in different churches across the State.

The government’s renewed emphasis on security during Christmas comes in the backdrop of the recent controversy surrounding the threat by some organisations to re-convert Christians to Hinduism, dubbed as “ghar-vapsi” .

State IG (Law and Order), A. Satish Ganesh said the police and administrative officers in the districts had been asked to maintain special vigil to ward off any untoward incident. Mr. Ganesh said the security plan will remain effective till New Year’s Eve.
