A woman from Saharanpur who was set on fire for resisting rape on Saturday died of severe burn injuries late on Sunday night. She was 26 and a resident of Nunabadi village. She died in the district hospital.

Superintendent of Police (Saharanpur Rural) Jagdeesh Sharma said an FIR has been filed against the accused under stringent sections of the IPC including 302. “The victim was the wife of a labourer and was alone at home when the accused, her neighbour, entered the house and tried to rape her. When she resisted him, he became angry and poured kerosene on her and set her on fire and ran away from the scene. Her neighbours informed the police,” said Mr. Sharma.

C.P. Katheria, in charge of Badgnav police station under which Nunabadi village falls, told The Hindu “We are probing this matter. The accused will soon be in police custody because we are raiding his possible hideouts.”
