A local Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh leader Ravinder Gosain was shot dead near his house in Ludhiana on Tuesday.

The two bike-borne assailants with their faces covered fled the scene after committing the crime. Mr. Gosain suffered two bullet injuries, one in the head and another in the shoulder. The leader was returning home after attending a routine drill (shakha) of the RSS.

Ludhiana Police Commissioner R.N. Dhoke said investigations had begun, but it would be premature to call it a terrorist crime.

Mr. Gosain was “Mukhya Shikshak” of the Mohan Shakha of the RSS in Ludhiana and was also the office bearer of the district Bharatiya Janata Party.

Senior RSS leader Jagdish Gagneja was gunned down in Jalandhar by by bike-borne assailants last year and the case is yet to be cracked by the police.

Aam Aadmi Party condemned the killing and accused the ruling Congress government led by Capt. Amarinder Singh of failing to protect people’s lives. AAP State co-president Aman Arora said this was not the first time a party activist was killed in broad day light. Incidents of this kind were happening repeatedly.

“Police have failed to get any clue in the previous cases. The law and order situation has worsened with the change of guard in the State,” he said.

Mr. Arora said that Capt. Amarinder must hand over the Home department to a capable Minister who would be available in the State. He said the killers of priest Sultan Masih, Mata Chand Kaur of the Namdhari sect and Jalandhar-based RSS activist Jagdish Gagneja were still at large.

Capt. Amarinder has said that those behind the RSS leader’s murder would be caught soon.
