Suspended Nationalist Congress Party MLA Dilip Wagh (45), who was booked for allegedly raping a 20-year-old, and his secretary Bunty alias Mahesh Mali (26), were remanded in police custody till March 3.
Mr. Wagh was nabbed by the Mumbai Crime Branch from Bandra here on Saturday night while Mr. Mali was arrested in Nashik on Sunday morning, the police said. Both of them were produced in a Nashik court on Sunday.
To be quizzed about vehicle
Informed sources said the Public Prosecutor argued for the police custody of the accused on three grounds.
He said the police wanted to interrogate them about the vehicle they used to take the victim to various places.
The sources said the victim had mentioned in her complaint that she was taken to Malegaon.
The police want to find out to which places she was taken. The prosecutor also told the court that a third person might have been involved in the case and this aspect too needed to be probed.
Mr. Wagh is an MLA from Pachora in Jalgaon district. A 20-year-old had registered a case of rape against him on February 24 in Nashik. She said in her complaint that the MLA promised her a job and called her to a government guest house on February 21 where he raped her.
His secretary Mr. Mali too has been booked in this connection.
After a first information report was registered against them, both went absconding. The NCP suspended Mr. Wagh from the party on Saturday.
The MLA has been booked under Sections 376B (intercourse by a public servant with a woman in his custody) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
