A court here on Saturday issued summons to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case for his remarks against the RSS over entry to a monastery in Barpeta.
Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup, Sanjoy Hazarika summoned Mr. Gandhi on September 21 to face trial under Section 500 of the IPC, which prescribes simple imprisonment up to two years or fine or both for defamation.
An RSS volunteer Anjan Bora had filed the criminal case alleging that Mr. Gandhi had tarnished the organisation’s image by saying that he was not allowed by RSS members to enter Barpeta Satra, a 16th century Vaishnavite monastery, in Assam on December 12, 2015.
Mr. Bora said Mr. Gandhi was supposed to go to the Satra but instead took part in a padayatra.
On December 14, the Congress vice-president said at a press conference in New Delhi that he tried to enter the Satra but was instead prevented from doing so by its elected members and RSS supporters.
