The Meghalaya government has ordered a probe into the alleged mass graves in some areas in West Garo Hills district as demanded by a militant outfit.
The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has alleged that mass graves exist at Tura and Samanda in West Garo Hills district, where rival outfit Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) has dumped bodies after “secret killings.”
The ANVC has been holding peace talks with the government since a ceasefire in 2004.
Chief Secretary W.M.S. Pariat said an inquiry committee has been constituted..
Commissioner of Divisions Peter W. Ingty will head the probe and a report is expected within a month, government sources said.
The GNLA has threatened a dawn-to-dusk bandh on September 9, 12 and 14 if the government failed to take action on its allegations.
