Former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Monday quit as the Asom Gana Parishad president, owning moral responsibility for the debacle of the regional party in the recent Lok Sabha polls.
Mr. Mahanta tendered his resignation at a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee ahead of a meeting of the party’s General Council, scheduled for Tuesday to discuss steps to be taken for revival of the regional party.
Following Mr. Mahanta’s resignation, the party asked its working president Atul Bora to hold the top post till the formal election of a new president.
Mr. Bora said the General Council, which is the highest decision-making body, would take the final call on the issue of electing a new leadership to strengthen the regional party.
The party contested in 12 of the total 14 seats in the recent Lok Sabha polls but drew a blank.
This was the third time that Mr. Mahanta has quit as AGP president.
