At least five policemen were injured early today when villagers gheraoed English Bazar police station and threw stones at the policemen at Jadupur in Malda town.
The police said the villagers were angry when the police detained two van-rickshaw pullers for allegedly carrying illegal items.
The villagers said the police should have arrested those who hired the van-rickshaws and protested the arrest, sources said.
Later a large contingent of police reached the spot, lathicharged the villagers and arrested 15 of them, officials said.
The injured policemen were admitted to Malda Sadar Hospital.
