The police are investigating the alleged involvement of senior Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) leaders, including president Bimal Gurung, in a conspiracy to murder Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) president Madan Tamang, who was stabbed to death in Darjeeling on May 21.
Mr. Gurung, his wife Asha Gurung, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri and four other senior leaders have been named as conspirators in a first information report lodged by ABGL general secretary Laxman Pradhan.
FIR lodged
“The FIR mentions the names of seven leaders of the GJM for conspiracy and we are investigating the charges as well as collecting evidence, if any, in this regard,” K.L. Tamta, Inspector-General of Police, North Bengal, told The Hindu over telephone from Darjeeling on Sunday.
The GJM leadership has threatened to “court arrest en masse” if any of its leaders is arrested even as there are reports of a senior leader from Kalimpong resigning from the party in protest against the politics of violence in the hills.
“One arrest will lead to mass arrests,” said Benoy Tamang, GJM additional general secretary and one of those named in the FIR.
“The allegation brought against us in the FIR is false. Our president Bimal Gurung has demanded a CBI inquiry into Tamang's killing.”
