The chromosomal test report to determine athlete Pinki Pramanik’s gender, which is under question following allegations of rape, reached the State-run SSKM Hospital on Monday. The report will be submitted to a court on Tuesday.
“We have received the report of Karyotyping — a chromosomal test to determine the athlete’s gender. It is with the head of the medical board constituted to conduct the test on her,” hospital superintendent, T. K. Ghosh, told The Hindu .
Details of the report cannot be divulged, and will be sent to the court in a sealed envelope, he said. The athlete was subjected to the test on June 2, he added.
Following Ms. Pramanik’s arrest on June 14, a court in North 24 Parganas district had directed the administration to conduct the necessary test to ascertain the athlete’s gender.
The athlete’s neighbour had lodged a complaint at the Baguihati police station alleging that Ms. Pramanik was a male, and had repeatedly raped and tortured her.
The athlete was sent to a district hospital for examination and later referred to the SSKM Hospital, where an 11-member medical board was constituted.
The hospital conducted various tests on June 25, but due to unavailability of proper facilities, the Karyotyping test couldn’t be carried out.
Civil rights activists have approached the State’s Human Rights Commission alleging Pramanik was being mistreated by the police.
