The Thane police are awaiting the result of a paternity test to confirm rape of a 15-year-old girl, allegedly by a Shiv Sena leader in a suburb here. The girl was delivered of a premature baby on September 2. “We are awaiting the results of the DNA test,” Anil Kadam, inspector of the Kashimira police station, said.

The accused, Vasudev Nambiar (63), deputy district president of the Sena from Kashimira, said he was a celibate and the case was politically motivated. He was arrested on September 5 and remanded till September 11.

The police said the girl was studying in a school run by Nambiar. He allegedly raped her many times since January in a temple run by a Trust of which he is president.

Mr. Kadam said the victim revealed that she was raped by Nambiar. Based on her statement, a case had been registered and Nambiar was arrested.

The accused had threatened her of dire consequences and warned that she would be expelled from the school if she disclosed his name, the police said.
