Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Friday urged Muslims, Dalits and Other Backward Classes to unite and vote for her party’s candidates in the Agra region to prevent Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Narendra Modi from becoming the Prime Minister.
“If the BJP comes to power at the Centre it will once again try to review the Constitution to end reservation for you by forming a commission, just like it unsuccessfully tried when it was in power last time,” Ms. Mayawati said at a rally in Agra, adding that the BSP had then aborted the BJP plan by raising a hue and cry.
Hitting out at U.P. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, she said during her regime, government officials worked “punctually and promptly.” “Now under the Samajwadi Party government, officials do not bother to execute the Chief Minister’s orders or take telephone calls from the public,” she said.
Describing the manifestos of the BJP, the Congress and the SP as a “voter-appeasement tool that will be thrown out after the elections,” she said the BSP believed in delivering justice to sarva samaj (all communities).
She called upon the Baghel, Nishad, Kushwaha, Prajapati and Sahu sub-castes not to get swayed by the “sweet talk” of the BJP. She urged the OBCs not to believe Mr. Modi’s claim that he too belonged to their “biradari” (community) as he had to date not declared which backward class he belonged to.
Ms. Mayawati described the Congress as a system that had failed the country for over 50 years. The Congress, she said, did not have the guts to declare its “ yuvraj” (Rahul Gandhi) as the party’s prime ministerial candidate.
