One youth was killed and five others were injured on Friday after the police fired at demonstrators protesting against an alleged custodial death in the coal mining town of Singrauli, 780 km east of here.
Thousands of youth stormed police stations in the district headquarters after the body of 30-year-old trader Akhilesh Sahu was founding floating in a well on the outskirts of the town on Friday morning. Mr. Sahu had allegedly been detained in the Waidhan Police Station since December 5 in a case of diesel theft from Coal India premises.
Curfew was imposed in four police station areas in the district headquarters after at least five policemen were injured in stone pelting and eight vehicles, including those of the District Magistrate and senior police officers, were set ablaze.
Director General of Police Nandan Dube told The Hindu that the Additional DGP had been sent to Singrauli to investigate Mr. Sahu’s death. A magisterial enquiry has also been ordered.
“The boy was missing since December 5 and he was found in a well this morning. Youth who were furious took to the streets and indulged in violence in which our men were injured and vehicles set ablaze, at around 12.30 pm.
