Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today underlined the need for comprehensive and balanced development of twin capital cities and towns in the State keeping in view the challenges on account of sewerage, drainage, transport, housing and commercial activities.

Chairing a high level meeting to review the reforms in the urban development sector, the Chief Minister stressed on upgrading basic amenities in cities and towns and creating a good living environment.

He emphasised the need to involve the private sector in the construction of projects like multi-story parking complexes and multi-level bus terminals.

“This can be initiated by going for at least one project each in Srinagar and Jammu city on PPP mode”, he said.

Officials at the meeting also discussed issues regarding mandatory reforms for urban local bodies and municipalities to make these more effective and financially sound.

Issues of transfer of services to urban local bodies and municipalities, administrative reforms, structural reforms and setting up of an independent local ombudsman were also reviewed in the meeting.
