Odisha Board declares Class X results; girls outshine boys

Regular matriculates register an all-time record -- over 85 % pass

April 28, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - CUTTACK:

Not inclined to adopt the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) pattern as followed by the CBSE for Class X students, the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) here in Odisha is, nevertheless, trying its best to match the pass percentage of its students with that of the former.

This was observed when the BSE published the results of this year’s Matriculation examination here on Wednesday.

The Regular matriculates of the State registered an all-time record pass percentage -- with over 85 per cent coming out successfully in the examinations that were held in February-March. More than 35 per cent secured marks above 60 per cent.

‘No CCE yet’

But when asked, State School and Mass Education secretary Ranjana Chopra, who along with the department Minister Devi Prasad Mishra unveiled the result booklets here on the day, told this correspondent that the State government has no plans as of now to follow the CCE pattern for the Class X students.

“No such proposal (CCE) has come yet,” she said.

Out of 5,52,394 results published in Regular stream, a total of 4,70,645 students passed the examination, registering a pass percentage of 85.20. For the first time this year, the number of girls that passed the exam was higher at 2,38,430 than the boys (2,32,215).

As usual, the pass percentage in ex-regular category was much lower at 58.22 per cent.

Similarly, 61.22 per cent students passed in regular correspondence course and only 35.38 per cent students made it in the ex-regular correspondence course, pegging the overall pass percentage at 83.72.

In the Madhyama Examination (Matriculation in Sanskrit language), the results of which were also published on the day, out of 4,896 students appeared, a total of 4,049 students came out successfully, registering a pass percentage of 88.91.

Looking at the record number of students passing the Matriculation examination this year, admissions in the Plus II colleges of the State might see tough competition.

The State has some 1,500 government and private Plus II colleges that have combined enrolment strength of around 3 lakh in Arts, Science and Commerce streams.

Pass percentage in ex-regular category: 58.22; regular correspondence course: 61.22
