At least 9 migrant labourers from Assam were killed and 11 others seriously injured on Friday night in a grenade attack by militants at Nagamapal area in Imphal West district of Manipur.
The victims had been employed by a private construction firm.
According to reports, on Friday night some youths entered the makeshift shed where the labourers were staying and asked them to vacate. When the workers did not heed the warning, the youths returned and lobbed grenades, killing nine workers.
A security alert has been sounded and the blast site has been cordoned off.
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei rushed to Imphal, cutting short their Delhi visit.
Chief Minister in-charge Thoudam Devendra and other officials visited the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, where the injured have been admitted. Mr. Devendra said that the government will bear the medical expenses of the injured workers.
