The National Human Rights Commission on Thursday issued a notice to the Maharashtra Police in connection with the alleged murder of a 26-year-old accused by six policemen with the Sangli police.

NHRC officials said the Commission had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter after going through media reports. The notice was issued to Director General of Police, Maharashtra, Satish Mathur on Thursday. “The DGP has been given four weeks to submit a detailed report,” an NHRC officer said. The DGP has been asked to clarify why the Sangli police failed to inform the NHRC about the custodial death within 24 hours, as per the guidelines.

“The gruesome act is the worst example of cruelty and lawlessness amounting to violation of Right to Life of the victim,” said the officer.
