The National Students Union of India (NSUI), student wing of the Congress, on Tuesday suspended its Mumbai unit chief Suraj Singh Thakur for his “indecent behaviour” at a function of the organisation in a city suburb last month.
The NSUI also suspended two other office bearers, who were caught on camera dancing alongside Mr. Thakur in an inebriated state.
The suspension order was signed by NSUI national president Rohit Chaudhary on instructions from Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who had received a complaint against Mr. Thakur’s behaviour, informed sources said.
Reports said Mr. Thakur danced in the nude at the NSUI camp held in Kandivali on April 14. He was re-elected as Mumbai NSUI president in December last.
The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, however, attempted to downplay the incident, saying Mr. Thakur was suspended for party indiscipline.
“Reports of him being suspended for indecent behaviour are mere rumours… he and two others have been given the rap for ‘undisciplined’ behaviour within the NSUI,” said MPCC spokesperson Sachin Sawant.
