Miscreants snatched two AK-47 assault rifles and a carbine from a patrolling party of 19 India Reserve Battalion (IRBn) in the Rajgarh market area under the Tingkhong police station in upper Assam's Dibrugarh district on Wednesday night.

Inspector-General of Police (Eastern Range) L.R. Bisnoi told The Hindu that the miscreants snatched the weapons from the jawans while they were on patrol duty. The incident took place around 8 p.m. and DSP Arabinda Kalita rushed to the spot, he said.

Mr. Bisnoi said that it was too early to come to a conclusion on whether the weapons were snatched by militants or a criminal gang, in the absence of first-hand information.
