Mayawati slams U.P. Govt. on law and order front

April 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - LUCKNOW:

Bahujan Samaj Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati slammed the Samajwadi Party Government on the law and order and crime situation in the State. She asserted that maintenance of law and order was never a priority for the Government. She further said the Government’s concern for development was “limited to Saifai, Etawah and Kannauj”. “Whatever little has been done in the name of development, those efforts have been discriminatory,” Ms. Mayawati said.

The BSP president alleged a caste angle to the beneficiaries of various Government programmes. “Benefits have accrued to only a handful of people”, she said.

Describing the three years of the Samajwadi Party Government as synonymous with “jungle raj and all round confusion”, Ms. Mayawati said Uttar Pradesh had become more backward on account of “crime in politics”, “rule of mafia” and “large-scale corruption”. “As a result of the pathetic law and order situation in the State, prospects of development figured only on paper,” the BSP president said in the meeting of party coordinators here on Thursday.

Ms. Mayawati said the official machinery was in a state of stupor with incidents of crime in the State Capital a routine affair. She added that transfer industry flourished in the State. Addressing the party leaders and coordinators from different parts of the State, the BSP chief came down heavily on the “alleged scandal” in police recruitment. Referring to the State-wide protests by job aspirants against the police recruitment exercise, Ms. Mayawati described the situation as alarming.

The BSP president attributed the “sense of despair” in all sections of the society to the “wrong policies and actions” of both the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA Government at the Centre and the Samajwadi Party Government in the State. “The functioning of both the Governments was casteist and communal with the intention of benefitting a handful of people,” Ms. Mayawati stated.

On the proposed amendment in the Land Acquisition Law, Ms. Mayawati said the farmers were feeling insecure. She dubbed the amendment as anti-farmer, and said there is widespread anger among the people on account of the Central Government’s “wrong, obdurate and arrogant attitude”. Ms. Mayawati said the approach of the Narendra Modi Government on the issue of land acquisition is worse than that of the British rulers. She said the move was aimed at giving undue advantage to a few capitalists and the corporate sector.

Thursday’s meeting of the BSP leaders, office-bearers and coordinators was held in the context of the party’s preparedness for the 2017 Assembly elections. Progress report on the efforts to widen the party’s base in the “sarv samaj” (all sections) was presented to the BSP president by the party coordinators.
