Panaji: The Goa State Election Commission (GSEC) filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court at Goa on Friday stating it would be convenient to hold elections to 185 State panchayats on May 21.

The affidavit was filed by the secretary of the GSEC, Darshana Narulkar, in reply to a public interest litigation (PIL) by a Rohan Shirodkar.

The State government had asked the GSEC to conduct the election on June 25, but subsequently asked it to change the date to June 17.

The five-year term of 185 village panchayats, out of the total 186, expires on May 27.

The GSEC said in the affidavit that May 21 is a Sunday, and holding polls on that day would cause minimum inconvenience to industry and private establishments, and would facilitate the constitution of the elected bodies within time.
