Maoists kill village head in West Midnapore

Suspected Maoists shot dead a CPI(M) leader and village head of Salboni Gram Panchayat and dumped his body on the state highway near Jhargram on Saturday.

The bullet-riddled body of Karuna Mahato was found near Bikash Bharati area on the Lodhasuli-Jhargram state highway, police said.

“He was gunned down and shells of bullets were found near his body where a poster saying ‘police informer’ was also found,” police said.

Mr. Mahato was picked up from his house in Jitusole village, about 11 kms from Jhargram, by a group of suspected Maoists numbering about 20 around 10 pm on Friday night.

Suspected Maoists killed two policemen by triggering a landmine blast on Friday and shot dead a businessman in separate attacks near Lalgarh in West Midnapore district.
