Women activists on Friday raided three houses at Uripiok in the heart of the Imphal town to check the identity of the migrant workers who are staying in the rented rooms of these houses. There were 80 migrant workers staying in these rooms.

The women told reporters that just three of them could produce their identification papers. Sources said that the workers were advised to obtain their papers if they are going to stay in the rooms.

The women activists also appealed to all house owners not to keep migrant workers in their rooms unless the workes produce identification paper and character certificates issued by the relevant police stations.

It is feared that some of them may be fugitives from law. Besides there had been series of crimes committed in and around Imphal. In the latest incident, one 24 years old migrant worker molested a girl inside an autorickshaw. After being thrashed he was handed over to police.

Meanwhile, sit in protests by women were held at various places on Friday demanding enforcement of the of the Inner Line Permit system in Manipur.
