Manipur ambush: Combing drive on

A day after six Assam Rifles personnel were killed in an ambush by suspected militants in Chandel district of Manipur, officials said no group had so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Security agencies believe the attack was carried out by CorCom (Coordination Committee), the umbrella group of six banned underground organisations.

Officials said the reason for no one coming forward was to avoid retaliation from the security forces as happened after the attack by the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) last year.

On June 4 last year, 18 soldiers from 6 Dogra regiment were killed in an ambush believed to have been orchestrated by the NSCN(K) following which the Army carried out a covert operation on insurgent camps inside Myanmar.

Meanwhile, security forces are carrying out combing operations to nab the insurgents involved in Sunday’s attack.

Officials said the area had been cordoned off to prevent them from crossing over to neighbouring Myanmar.

The attackers are said to have taken away six automatic rifles — four AK series rifles, one INSAS rifle and a Light Machine Gun — magazines and live rounds of ammunition from the personnel of 29 Assam Rifles.
