Mailbag in Imphal river; postmen get marching orders

February 23, 2014 03:14 am | Updated May 18, 2016 10:21 am IST - IMPHAL

A mailbag containing 737 Aadhaar cards, 19 insurance policies and letters were recovered from the Imphal river near Chekkon on Saturday, leading to the suspension of the postmaster of a post office in Imphal east district.

It is suspected that postmen dumped the bag in the river. Some articles have been swept away. Those retrieved are of no use since water has damaged them. People who found the bag handed it over to a journalist who, in turn, gave it to the activists of Macha Leima, a women’s social organisation.

A formal complaint has been lodged with the police and the post office. Officials have not disclosed the names of the postmen.
