The monsoon trough over the Gangetic belt turned into a low pressure on Thursday promising more rains in south Bengal districts that are already reeling under the impact of excess downpours since Saturday.
Regional Meteorological Centre director G C Debnath told PTI that under the influence of the low pressure, isolated heavy rains are likely in next 24 hours in South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura and adjoining areas of Jharkhand and north Orissa.
Occasional isolated rains are also likely in Kolkata during the period.
Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rains continued to batter most of the nine south Bengal districts where major rivers were already flowing above the danger level and inundating large areas of crop land and human habitation.
Damodar Valley Corporation released a total of 62,000 cusecs of water from its Maithon and Panchet reservoirs during the day, DVC sources said.
Submergence of tracks by rain water forced Eastern Railway to cancel the Howrah-New Delhi Yuva Express and Howrah-Malda Town Intercity Express today.
The Howrah-Danapur Express and Howrah-Mumbai Mail were rescheduled.
Railway sources said digging of a trench under the track between Harua road and Sandalia stations by villagers to drain out rain waters disrupted train movement between Hasnabad and Barasat stations of Eastern Railways for over six hours.
