Former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat of the Congress got a major relief on Wednesday as the Special Court for Prevention of Corruption granted him an anticipatory bail in the Louis Berger bribery case.
The Crime Branch of the State police probing the scandal pertaining to a JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) funded water and sewerage development project in Goa had sought his custody, in which it was alleged that Minister(s) and some officials had taken bribe for granting consultancy contract for the project in 2010.
Mr. Kamat has been >interrogated five times in the case by the officials. Other persons arrested in connection with the case were former PWD Minister Churchill Alemao; A. M. Vachasundar, former Director of JICA-funded Water and Sewerage Project, former country vice president of Louis Berger firm in India Satyakam Mohanti who has been released on a conditional bail and alleged hawala operator Raichand Soni. Mr. Vachasundar, and Mr. Alemao are in judicial custody while Mr. Soni is in police custody.
