Legal fraternity shocked over ex-AG’s arrest

Terming the arrest of former advocate General (AG) Ashok Mohanty by the CBI as “unfortunate”, the legal fraternity in Odisha have criticised the CBI for its high-handedness. The State Bar Council chairman Manas Ranjan Mohapatra reacting to the arrest said that the CBI has arrested the former AG with political connotation.

A team of CBI sleuths arrested Mohanty from his Markat Nagar residence here and immediately took him to CBI regional office at Bhubaneswar. Reports reaching here said Mohanty was taken to a CBI court later in the evening after his medical examination in a hospital.

Mohanty, who was serving as the State AG since 2009 had tendered his resignation on May 17 after the result of the State Assembly election was declared on May 16.

However, his resignation was accepted on September 12, just the day before he was summoned by the CBI.
