The Left Front comprising the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will jointly contest seven out of the 40 seats in the March 3 Goa Assembly elections.

The CPI will field its candidates from Panaji, Santa Cruz, Saligao, Priol and Sanquelim, while the CPI(M) will contest the Sanvordem and Mayem seats, CPI General Secretary Christopher Fonseca announced last week.

Mr. Fonseca, a prominent trade union leader, said that the party's general council and the Secretariat, after much deliberation, decided to contest the 2012 Goa Assembly polls.

“We feel these elections are important for Goa and the people of Goa, especially the common people — working class, senior citizens, women and youth. When opportunities like these come, people have a chance to decide and choose their representatives. Also it is the duty of a party committed to social problems to come out and fight the elections,” Mr. Fonseca said, adding that his party had always fought the issues of the working class and common people like high inflation, joblessness, contract and other forms of exploitation of the working class which have magnified in a big way after the liberalisation of the economy.
