Left parties in Uttarakhand join hands for Assembly polls

Issues of the State and its people had been sidelined

August 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:11 am IST - Dehradun:

Objecting to the “politics of corruption” being practised by the Congress and the BJP in the hill State, three Left parties — the CPI, the CPI (M), and the CPI (ML) — have decided to join hands ahead of the Uttarakhand Assembly elections.

In a recent meeting held at Gopeshwar, 250 km from Dehradun, the parties decided “to choose the politics of mass struggle against the politics of corruption” practised by various parties, including the Congress and the BJP.

Three years into the 2013 floods, no steps had been taken for rehabilitation of many villagers living in disaster-prone areas across the State. Also, with the recent Congress-BJP politics that led to President’s Rule here and the issues of the State and its people had been sidelined, they felt.

Considering that the leaders of the Congress and the BJP were now conspiring against each other to win the upcoming polls, the Left parties have decided to form a “strong” alliance against them.

Joint campaign

Indresh Maikhuri, Garhwal secretary of the CPI (ML), said, “The three Left parties will field only one candidate in each seat and workers of the three parties will campaign together for the candidate.”

Despite the tie-up, the Left still remains a weak opponent for the Congress and the BJP. Currently, the 71-member Uttarakhand Assembly has no legislator from any of the Left parties.
