RJD chief Lalu Prasad arrives at Patna airport Thursday. He is on three-day parole to attend his elder son Tej Pratap's wedding.

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad reached Patna on Thursday after he was granted a three-day parole to attend his elder son Tej Pratap’s wedding on May 12.

Tej Pratap Yadav, his brother Tejashwi Yadav, sister Misa Bharti and a large number of RJD leaders and supporters were present at the Patna airport to welcome him.

Mr. Prasad, lodged in Ranchi jail, had applied for a five-day parole and was expected to reach Patna on Wednesday. However, the authorities granted him parole for three days on the condition that he would not speak to the media. “We granted him three-day parole after considering the need,” said Jharkhand Inspector General of Police (Prison) Harsh Mangla.

The security personnel at the airport had a tough time escorting Mr. Prasad to his vehicle due to the supporters who had gathered in large numbers. He reached 10, Circular Road, the official residence of Rabri Devi, in a caravan of vehicles.

Ceremonies have begun in Patna for the wedding. “We are expecting more than 20,000 guests,” said state RJD chief Ram Chandra Purve.
