Kolkata woman mowed down after abduction bid

The victim was on her way back home when the helper of a truck tried to pull her into the vehicle

In an incident which has once again raised questions on the a security of women in the State, a woman was crushed to death by a light commercial vehicle in West Bengal Hooghly district, when the helper of the vehicle tried to abduct her.

The incident occurred near Chinsurah about 65 km from Kolkata.

The victim, Jayanti Soren was returning home after working in a lozenge factory on Friday evening.

Deserted stretch

According to her father’s complaint lodged at Polba police station, Jayanti and her female colleagues were on their way home from the factory on a deserted road when the helper of a matadoor (mini truck) tried to pull her into the vehicle.

She resisted, fell down on the road and came under the wheels of the moving vehicle.

The driver and the helper of the vehicle managed to escape, but the vehicle has been impounded.

Jayanti’s friends have also sustained injuries in the incident. The women have to walk the deserted stretch everyday while returning home from work.

Identities established

“We have established the identities of the driver and the helper. A special team has been constituted to nab the duo at the earliest,” Superintendent of Police, Hooghly, Pravin Tripathi, told journalists.

The accused have been booked under several charges including that of murder and outraging modesty of a woman, the police said.

2013 gang rape case

In June 2013, the gang rape and murder of college student at Kamduni village in North 24 Parganas district had resulted in a massive outrage.

Three of the accused in the case have been sentenced to death while three were awarded life imprisonment.
