Congress president Sonia Gandhi has written to Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, expressing anguish over a Dalit father and daughter being burnt alive in the State.
‘Cannot be allowed'
She described the incident as a “matter of shame.” Party sources said Ms. Gandhi asked for “firm and severe” action against the perpetrators and said such incidents “cannot be allowed to happen.”
She said it was “totally unacceptable” that the incident happened in the presence of a naib tehsildar and a police officer.
Ms. Gandhi also asked the Chief Minister to pay “personal and urgent attention” to protect the Dalits from further violence and take measures to bring perpetrators to justice and ameliorate the sufferings of those who have borne the brunt of the attacks.
A Dalit man and his daughter were burnt alive at Mirchpur in Hissar district on April 21. Congress general-secretary Rahul Gandhi visited the village on Thursday.
