A judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court jumped into the Sukhna lake to save a young girl from drowning last week. Helped by his security officer, who too jumped in after him, the judge brought the girl out.

It was on March 30 during his morning walk on the banks of the lake that Justice M. Jeyapaul observed a commotion. Several people were shouting for help after noticing a girl drowning. He immediately dived into the lake.

He and his security officer Yashpal swam towards the girl who had by then gone under the surface. Mr. Yashpal, it is learnt, went after her and pulled her to the surface.

Though the girl was unconscious when she was brought to the shore, she was revived and taken to a hospital. She is said to have attempted suicide because her father said he could no longer support her studies, despite her securing good marks. The Judge then gave the family money to support her studies. He has also recommended his security officer for a cash reward and promotion.
