The Assembly on the last day of its three-day special sitting on Monday unanimously passed the Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis calling it a historic step.

Finance Minister Sudhir Munguntiwar claimed that though the Centre has a provision of compensating the State for the next five years, it will be in such a position that it may not even require the compensation after two-three years. Earlier, Mr. Munguntiwar participated in a day-long discussion on the Bill On Sunday, the Opposition slammed the BJP and the Shiv Sena on issues ranging from demonetisation to financial indiscipline.

Thanking the members for passing the Bill, Mr. Fadnavis said just like VAT, which added wealth to the treasury, the GST too will be beneficial.
