Maharashtra government is trying to make the 23-year old intern photojournalist’s gang rape case “watertight”, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said in Mumbai on Wednesday.

“Yes, there are problems in judicial process. However, we are trying to make the case water-tight,” Mr. Chavan told reporters at the Mantralaya.

“We will punish the accused, as it will send a strong message to others. We will file the chargesheet in the case, after due consultation with special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam,” he said.

Cases related to rape are not being reported, he said, “Measures will have to be taken to speed up the cases (trial in fast-track courts),” he added.

On >Narendra Dabholkar killing case , Mr. Chavan said the accused and conspirators in the rationalist’s murder would be exposed soon.

“No concrete leads have been found in the case,” he said. Nineteen teams of police are on the job, he added.

The investigation is being carried out from various angles, he said. Phone call records are also been checked, he added.
